There was a 29% increase in the number of homicide victims in Victoria, from 82 in 2013 to 106 in 2014.
In Victoria during 2014:
61% of homicide victims in Victoria were male (65 victims);
More than half of homicide victims knew the offender (53% or 56 victims), with a third of all homicides being committed by a family member (32% or 34 victims);
Murder victims accounted for just over half of all homicide victims (55% or 58 victims);
The most common location in which murder occurred was a residential location (71% or 41 victims); and
Of weapons used in murder, the most common was a knife (71% or 20 victims).
There was a 6.4% increase in the number of sexual assault victims in Victoria, from 3,920 in 2013 to a five year high of 4,169 in 2014.
In Victoria during 2014:
The majority of sexual assault victims (85% or 3,542 victims) were female;
Victims aged 19 years and under accounted for nearly half of all sexual assault victims (49% or 2,047 victims);
The most common location in which sexual assault occurred was a residential location (64% or 2,665 victims); and
The offender was known to 70% of victims (2,911 victims), with one in four offenders (25% or 1,056 victims) being a family member.
The number of robbery victims in Victoria decreased by 12% from 2,605 in 2013 to a five year low of 2,286 in 2014.
In Victoria during 2014:
The largest proportion of robberies occurred at a community location (55% or 1,252 victims);
The majority of robbery victims were male (76% or 1,552 victims); and
For approximately half of all robbery victims, a weapon was used by the offender (1,143 victims compared to 1,142 victims for whom a weapon was not used).
The number of motor vehicle theft victims in Victoria increased by 9.8% from 12,051 in 2013 to 13,227 in 2014. Motor vehicle thefts were most common at a community location (53% or 7,060 victims).
